Help: Tax Information
The Tax Information page will show any 1098-E or 1098-T tax documents that are on file. ECSI may not perform this service for every school so you may not be able to find information on your account. Every account which ECSI has processed is on our web site.
Just above the form is a box which lists the tax documents currently on file for this account. Up to ten years of both 1098-E and 1098-T documents may be available. The most current document is shown by default. If multiple documents are available, select one from the list and press the View button.
The middle portion of the page displays a facsimile of the form that was sent to you. The bottom of the page provides some navigation choices.
The information for a 1098-E includes:
- Recipient/Lender's name, address and telephone number: This block identifies the school who is submitting this information, along with their contact information. The recipient is the person who received the loan payments.
- Recipient's Federal Identification No.: This is the federal tax id of the school.
- Borrower's SSN: The federal tax ID (SSN) of the borrower. The borrower is the person who took the loan.
- Student loan interest received: The amount of interest that you paid on the loan(s) during the tax year. Your deduction may be less than this amount (consult the tax regulations and filing guidelines).
- Borrower's name and address: The borrower's name and the address information on file when the tax documents were printed.
- Account Number: Not used. Your SSN can uniquely identify you to the school, even when you are assigned a different account number.
The information for a 1098-T includes:
- Filer's name, address and telephone number: This block identifies the school who is submitting this information, along with their contact information. The recipient is the person who received the loan payments.
- Filer's Federal Identification No.: This is the federal tax id of the school.
- Student's SSN: The federal tax ID (SSN) of the borrower. The borrower is the person who took the loan.
- Student loan interest received: Two boxes (marked 1 and 2) can contain dollars provided by the school. The school is not required, under current regulations, to provide any amounts in these boxes.
- Student's name and address: The borrower's name and the address information on file when the tax documents were printed.
- Account Number: Not used. Your SSN can uniquely identify you to the school, even when you are assigned a different account number.
- At least half-time student: If you attended at least half-time, this box will be checked. If you attended less than half-time, you cannot claim a Hope credit. Status does not effect the lifetime learning credit.
- Graduate Student: If you were enrolled exclusively in a program leading to a graduate degree, certificate or credential.
The bottom portion of the page contains the navigation functions. You can request Help (this document), return to the My Account page or Logout of the My Account service.
There are many rules and regulations regarding the 1098-E and 1098-T. A summary is printed below the form, similar to the paper copy you were sent. Additional information can be found on our Tax Incentives page.
