New Military Deferment Entitlement
Per the Department of Education, every school is required to notify each student/borrower that they are entitled to the following Military Deferment for the Perkins Loan Program:
"Effective July 1, 2001, for a period not to exceed three years during which I am serving on active duty during a war or other military operation or national emergency, or performing qualifying National Guard duty during a war or other military operation or national emergency."
ECSI decided to notify each of your students/borrowers one of two ways:
- e-mail notification
- postcard notification (only to those without e-mail addresses)
ECSI also created a memo for each borrower stating the method of notification and when it was created/sent.
Since this entitlement has a retro beginning date of July 1, 2001, we will need to "split" certain Perkins loans. We have decided to make a modification to the deferment module and will ONLY split a Perkins loan if a borrower has disbursement dates before July 1, 2001. This will save each of you a great deal of money. Our process will be to analyze each Perkins loan at the time we/you are attempting to add a Military Deferment. If the loan needs to be split (because of disbursement dates prior to July 1, 2001), we will do this at the time of the deferment processing. A memo will also be created stating that the split has occurred.

Just a reminder, ECSI has a new fax number. The new number is 866-291-5384. Through a company called My Fax, all incoming faxes are now converted to PDF files and received via email. The new fax process automatically forwards faxes from the old 412-494-5626 number. Please be sure to update this important contact information.
