May 23, 2003 The Department of Education has recently released a Notice in the Federal Register that waives the 3 year limit on Perkins Loan forbearances for certain borrowers called to military duty. This waiver is effective May 14, 2003. For the specific criteria needed to waive the limit, you can read the notice by clicking on the link below. In SAL, use the deferment code 'XD' to post a military forbearance that is not limited to 3 years, and use the deferment code 'FD' for a regular forbearance. In the past, we were using the code 'FD' for this situation. If you know certain borrowers who have had a military forbearance processed with the code 'FD,' we suggest that you delete the 'FD' and add an 'XD' for the same time frame.
