Borrower Eligibility Criteria Members of the National Guard called to Federal active duty service; reserve or retired members of the Armed Forces called to active duty; active duty members of the Armed Forces who are reassigned. Members of the National Guard and reserve or retired members of the Armed Forces called to active duty at the time, or within six months prior to the time, the borrower was enrolled in a program of instruction at an eligible institution.
Military Service Eligibility Criteria Active duty military service or qualifying National Guard duty service in connection with a war, military operation (defined as a "contingency operation") or national emergency. For members of the National Guard: active State duty. For members of the Armed Forces: all active duty service except for active duty service for training or attendance at a service school.
Benefits During Periods of Eligible Military Service A military service deferment may be granted based on a request from the borrower or the borrower’s representative. Supporting documentation is required. There is no limit to the number of years an eligible borrower may received a military service deferment. Not Applicable
Benefits After Periods of Eligible Military Service The military service deferment ends 180 days after the demobilization date for the eligible military service. (ECSI auto-posts this demobilization deferment, with the deferment code DM, directly after the MZ deferment is up) The borrower must request the active duty student deferment, and must provide supporting documentation to the loan holder. The deferment begins at the conclusion of the borrower’s active duty military service. The deferment lasts for 13 months, unless the borrower returns to enrolled student status within the 13-month deferment period. The deferment expires at the time the borrower returns to enrolled student status.
