Many changes in congressional leadership have been made since former House Education and Workforce Committee Chairman John Boehner (R-OH) was named House Majority Leader, the second-ranking position in the House leadership. John Boehner is a big advocate of the Perkins loan program. Congressman Howard McKoen (R-CA) was appointed to take Boehner’s place as Chairman of the full Committee. Mckoen is also an advocate of the Perkins loan program, and is likely to support it’s continuation. The Committee has announced that Representative Ric Keller (FL) will replace McKoen as the 21st Century Competitiveness Subcommittee Chairman. The Subcommittee has jurisdiction over federal higher education, student aid, job training programs, welfare reform programs, and childcare services. Several other key full Committee staff members have also been named. James Bergeron will serve as Counselor to McKoen, advising him on all issues before the Committee, and will be focusing on American competitiveness issues and continuing efforts to strengthen education and job training programs. Also joining the Committee is Rob Borden, who will serve as it’s General Counsel.
