Our records show you obtained a Perkins Loan(s) prior to July 1992, which now qualify for additional cancellation benefits.

Per 1998 amendments to the Higher Education Act signed by the President of the United States on Oct 7, 1998 all PERKINS Student Loans now have provisions for cancellation benefits (loan forgiveness) for full-time employment in the following fields:

• Teaching in low-income schools
• Head Start staff member
• Special Education teacher
• Teaching math, science, foreign languages, bilingual education or any other field of expertise that is determined by a state education agency to have a shortage of qualified teachers in that state.
• Nurse or medical technician
• Early Intervention
• Child or family service agency
• Law Enforcement.

All Perkins Loan borrowers with an outstanding Perkins loan balance that meet the eligibility criteria are entitled to cancellation FOR SERVICE AFTER OCTOBER 1, 1998. (ACCOUNT STATUS MUST BE CURRENT. CANCELLATION BENEFITS WILL NOT APPLY ON PAST-DUE AMOUNTS.)

In addition you may be eligible to defer payments on your loan for the following reason:

• Graduate program
• Fellowship program
• Economic Hardship
• Rehabilitation
• Unemployment
