Help: Printing Web Pages

Most of the documents on ECSI's site (such as the one you are viewing now) will print correctly using the browser's standard 'Print' feature.

Sometimes, reports are presented as web pages and will not print correctly using the browser's normal settings. Most of the reports on ECSI's site are designed to print in 132 columns. Web browsers typically have very minimal support for printing documents. This document will address some solutions to getting wide web pages to print properly.

Option 1: Using the Browser
Both Netscape and Microsoft have the option to change the size of the font. Our tests showed that Netscape Navigator failed to change the size of the font sent to the printer using the technique documented below. If you are using Netscape, we suggest you follow the instructions in Option 2. If you have Microsoft's Internet Explorer version 5 or above, follow these instructions to print:

  1. From the menu bar, select 'View'
  2. Select 'Text Size'
  3. Select either 'Smaller' or 'Smallest' (Start with smaller. If that doesn't work, then try smallest)
  4. Right-click on the report (you can click anywhere on the report page)
  5. Select 'Print' from the pop-up menu
  6. Select 'Landscape'. Reports will not print properly in portrait. In Internet Explorer 5, you will find the landscape choice on the 'Layout' page. You may have to look around if you have a different version of explorer.
  7. Press the 'Print' button and you are done.
  8. You only need to repeat steps 4, 5 and 7 for each subsequent report you wish to print.

Option 2: Download Report and Print from Notepad/Wordpad
Both Netscape and Microsoft provide the option to download pages from the Internet. This method will describe downloading and printing a report from a web page.

    Internet Explorer
  1. Right-click anywhere on the report
  2. Select 'View Source' from the pop-up menu
  3. The report will load in Notepad
  4. From the menu bar, select 'Format'
  5. Select 'Font'
  6. Select 'Courier New' from the list of fonts
  7. If you are printing portrait (short edge of paper across the top), you must type '7' in the size field.
  8. If you are printing landscape (long edge across the top), select 10 from the list of font sizes.
  9. If you selected portrait, you can skip this step. From the menu, select 'File' then 'Page Setup'. Select 'Landscape'.
  10. From the menu, select 'File' and 'Print'
  11. Some versions of Windows will begin to print immediately. Other versions will show the printer options box. If presented with a printer box, select your printer and press the 'Print' button.
    Netscape Navigator (4.5)
  1. Right-click on the link that would take you to the report you wish to print
  2. Select 'Save Link As' from the pop-up menu
  3. Select a directory on your hard disk. Remember where you put the file!
  4. Open 'My Computer'
  5. Open the drive where the file is saved (proceed to the folder you selected in Step 3.
  6. Left-click (only one time) on the file you saved.
  7. Hold down the 'Shift' key and right-click on the file
  8. Select 'Open With' from the pop-up menu
  9. Select 'Notepad' from the list (the report will now load in Notepad)
  10. From the Notepad menu bar, select 'Format' then 'Font'
  11. Select 'Courier New' from the list of fonts
  12. If you are printing portrait (short edge of paper across the top), you must type '7' in the size field.
  13. If you are printing landscape (long edge across the top), select 10 from the list of font sizes.
  14. If you selected portrait, you can skip this step. From the menu, select 'File' then 'Page Setup'. Select 'Landscape'.
  15. From the menu, select 'File' and 'Print'
  16. Some versions of Windows will begin to print immediately. Other versions will show the printer options box. If presented with a printer box, select your printer and press the 'Print' button.

Printing from the web can be an aggravating proposition at times. The majority of reports will print correctly if you follow one of the two options outlined above.
