Save the Perkins Loan Program - Information and Sample Letters

Dear Colleagues,

As you may already know, President Bush's Proposed Budget for FY 2006 provides no Federal Capital Contribution for the Perkins Loan Program and it's also asking for the elimination of the Perkins Program all together! Next week, 475 Congressional Members will vote to either save or eliminate the Perkins Program and it is estimated that 450 of them do not know what a Perkins Loan is!

As you can see, President Bush's Proposed Budget Cuts are real and it is our responsibility to educate our Congressional Members on the benefits of the Perkins Loan Program, both on a personal level (loss of jobs) and professional level (lack of funds for students to continue their education).

Again, time is of the essence and our efforts may actually SAVE THE PERKINS PROGRAM. So please take a few minutes to do one or more of the following:

Write a Personal Letter (and/or a Letter from your School) to each Congressional Member in your District.
Encourage letters from Presidents, Chancellors, Bursars, and any other influential people at your Institutions.
Encourage letters from Parents and Students.
Publish articles in both your Local and Student Newspapers.
Contact other New York Colleges and Universities and urge them to do the same.
